When I was going through one of the worst breakups of my life in London I was taking refuge at my mate’s flat in Elephant and Castle.

My best childhood friend who was like a sister to me, Lucy, had passed away in her twenties and the last place we’d gone for brunch in New York was at a little spot in the West Village called Elephant & Castle, so it was somewhat amusing to me that I’d ended up in its namesake in London.

It was symbolic, because for Lucy I’d gotten a tattoo on my left leg and a twin tattoo on my right leg for the ex who I was now leaving and had fled to Elephant and Castle to escape.

It was my own rebirth and the end of a past life. I even saw a flock of crows daily for a few days atop a tree from my friend’s attic flat.

After I returned to New York, the theme song for my recovery was “Feel Good” by Maribou State. Quite literally, a few days later, the mate whose flat I’d been staying in at Elephant and Castle texted me:

“Don’t know if you’ve heard of a band called Maribou State?”

“Yeah, I like their music, solid, why?”

“I’m gonna be famous,” he said jokingly, “One of my friends is shooting their tour visuals and I’m going to be in the video.”

“Niiice are you friends with them? What are you doing in the vid?”

“I’m basically lying around in an empty pool looking like a bit of a dick,” he responded. “I mean being sexy of course hahaha…”

“I want to see it!”

“I’ll ask my friend Ben to send a copy .”
