When I was living in Barcelona I deepened my fascination with Latin writers as well as surrealism: I had ordered a book called “Pedro Páramo” written by Mexican writer Juan Rulfo. I bought it in the first few days I was living with a Mexican artist, Carolina. I’d spend that summer carrying that book around my backpack, reading it on Sundays on a terrace in front of the Sagrada Família.

I moved out of Carolina’s apartment a couple weeks later, to another room that I could properly occupy for the next two months. This one was smack dab in the middle of town, and I would be living with a couple of Spaniards — one was even a book editor for one of the largest Spanish publication houses and had lived in Sevilla.

When I was going through one of the worst breakups of my life in London I was taking refuge at my mate’s flat in Elephant and Castle.

My best childhood friend who was like a sister to me, Lucy, had passed away in her twenties and the last place we’d gone for brunch in New York was at a little spot in the West Village called Elephant & Castle, so it was somewhat amusing to me that I’d ended up in its namesake in London.
